Engorged Breasts

Engorged Breasts

There are times when baby will not feed as often as you would like them to for whatever reason, because of this there will be an abundance of milk in the breasts. As this happens, more blood will flow to your breasts and some of the surrounding tissue will swell. The result is full, swollen, Engorged Breasts.

At some point or another the breastfeeding mother will experience engorged breasts. Engorged breasts can often feel hot, hard and uncomfortable. The best way to alleviate this is by letting your baby feed as much as they need to. A nice warm shower will also help with the pain and the swelling and will also help to soften the tissues again.

Expressing the extra milk using a breast pump is also a good idea to help top alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with engorged breasts. Expressing milk with breast pump while the breasts are engorged may be a little uncomfortable initially but as more milk is expressed the breasts will feel better.

Investing in a breast pump is a very wise idea.Having a breast pump also makes it easier to include other family members in feeding time as milk can be expressed in a bottle thereby giving siblings and partner the opportunity to feed baby.

Breast pumps come in many styles but the two basic options are manual pumps and electric or battery operated pumps. Manual pumps, while easier than hand expressing, are harder to use and take longer. Mothers that have to pump at least once a day will prefer the electric or battery operated models.

Electric breast pumps usually have more power than the battery operated ones. Pumps also have different accessories that make it easier to pump milk depending on the model. Prices range widely, with the manual pumps being the cheapest and the hospital grade pumps being the most expensive. Moms should look at different options, costs, and maintenance requirement when choosing the right breast pump.
